My new studio is located just a few blocks from Dahlonega's historical square, and is known for cozy, laid-back, Hallmark-movie vibes! Think NC, Highlands, but much closer, cozier, and centered around families!

A Local’s Guide to Dahlonega, GA: Fall Edition

Dahlonega, GA is the perfect destination for fall lovers. There’s just something so cozy and magical about my real life “Hallmark Town” during the ‘ber months!

The leaves start turning gold right along with the town's gold rush history, the square makes you feel like you’re in a Gilmore Girls episode, every corner feels like it was made for a sweater and a good cup of coffee. 

As a mama who's lived and worked in this town for years (and photographed more families here than I can count), I get asked all the time for my favorite fall spots… and well since I don’t run short of recommendations, I decided to round it all up for a this local’s guide to Dahlonega, GA – fall edition. 🍂

From where to stay, where to eat, things to do, and can’t miss fall activities, these are all places I actually visit and things I actually do with my own family! So if you’re planning a trip to Dahlonega this fall, keep reading to make the most out of it. 

Where To Stay For a Fall Weekend in Dahlonega, GA

Camping or Glamping

If you want fall colors with your morning coffee, camping (or glamping, if "roughing it" isn't really your thing – it’s not mine either 😂) is the move.

While not technically in Dahlonega, Amicalola Falls State Park is just 30 minutes away, and has everything from tent and RV sites to glamping tents located right near Georgia's tallest waterfall, and it's an easy home base for waterfall hopping all weekend.

For a more comfortable "glamping" experience with real beds and a roof, check Hipcamp for safari tents and treehouses tucked into the mountains just outside town.

Downtown Dahlonega Inns and Hotels

If you’re looking for a more accommodating experience that doesn’t involve staying in the woods, the Downtown Dahlonega Square has a few different inns and hotels that you can choose from to be right in the heart of our charming town.

A few of the top options include:

  • The Dahlonega Square Hotel – if you want a true inn experience, this 12 room hotel is located just 50 steps from the Dahlonega square, sits right next door to a tasting room, and offers breakfast in bed options with your stay.

  • 27 on Park – if you’re looking for a more upscale stay, yet still a charming feel, this boutique hotel is a great option! With only 14 rooms on-site, it feels [insert] while still offering all the amenities you might want for your fall weekend getaway.

  • Dahlonega Inn on Main – located just a few blocks from the historic Holly Theater, this bed and breakfast will take you back in time with all the original wood floors and fireplaces, as well as many other vintage touches throughout.

  • The Smith House – a Dahlonega classic, an 1899 historic inn just one block from the square offering rooms in the Main House, the newer Lodge, and even villas overlooking downtown, all with their famous family-style Southern dinner just steps away.


All of these options give you the ability to walk almost everywhere you’d want to go and have cozy amenities of their own that you can enjoy during your stay!

Outskirt Options

While the square is one of the top Dahlonega attractions, there’s also some great accommodation options on the outskirts! In fact, a lot of these options give you a chance to soak up the beautiful mountain scenery while you’re in town.

Here’s what I would recommend:

  • The Limelight Inn – set on 25+ acres just five miles from downtown, The Limelight Inn offers upscale rooms and private cottages surrounded by forest, with walking trails and a fireplace lobby to relax in after a day of exploring. It's quiet, peaceful, and still an easy drive back into the square!

  • Cottages at Kaya Vineyard – if you have a larger group, these craftsman-style cottages sit right beside one of the most popular Dahlonega vineyards, with front porches overlooking the mountains and shared firepits for evenings in. It's the perfect home base if you want vineyard views with your morning coffee.

  • Dahlonega Resort and Vineyard – set among its own vineyard just outside downtown, this small resort has several room options, many with breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, plus an on-site restaurant so you barely have to leave the property. It's a great pick if you want a resort-style stay with vineyard views right outside your window!

Airbnb 

For families or bigger groups, an Airbnb cabin just outside downtown is usually your best bet, especially in the fall when hotel rooms downtown book up fast around festival weekends.

There are SO many rental options in the area, but if it were up to me, I’d search for something along the Chestatee River or tucked into the hills toward Auraria for that true mountain-cabin feel, with a porch for morning coffee and easy access back into town for dinner.


Places To Eat in Dahlonega, GA

Once you’ve decided where to stay, it’s time to fill your itinerary with where to eat and OMGGGG, Dahlonega doesn’t run short of options! I could go on and on about all of the amazing restaurants in town, but instead I’ll give you my top picks for all the mealtimes:

Coffee and Breakfast

  • Dahlonega Social – located right next door to Connie’s Ice Cream, you'll find Dahlonega's newest coffee spot and home of locally roasted espresso drinks, pastries, and cozy vibes!

  • Bear Necessities – a cozy local favorite with creative coffee drinks, fresh pastries, and hearty breakfast options like their Bear Frittata and Breakfast Bearito.

  • Chef Pacos- a new local spot just off the square that offers the best brunch and dinner! I personally love their breakfast taco, and french toast. The steak and eggs along with the morning mountain lemon ricotta pancakes are on my list to try! If you can’t make breakfast/brunch go for dinner, you won’t be disappointed!

Lunch

  • Picnic Cafe – located in the heart of Dahlonega’s square, this little cafe will have you feeling like you’re sitting in Luke’s Diner! It’s always bustling at lunch time and rightfully so. They offer delicious sandwiches, homemade desserts, and coffee. My go-to order is the Georgia Peach chicken salad on a croissant with tomato bisque soup and a slice of the cake of the day! (It’s also a great breakfast spot.)

  • Gustavo’s – just down the street from Picnic Cafe, you’ll find Gustavo’s, a delicious spot for scratch-made pizza, pasta, and strombolis when you want something easy and crowd-pleasing. Their garlic and cheese rolls alone are worth the stop!

  • Nighthawk Tavern – hidden right on the square tucked inside the Fred Jones Building, you’ll find Nighthawk Tavern serving up tacos, pizza, and wings. The fried avocado tacos and their gluten-free pizza options are standouts, and their pet-friendly patio makes it an easy stop if you've got a pup along for the trip.

  • Underground – tucked just off the square, Underground blends bold street food flavors with Dahlonega's gold rush history, by offering craft cocktails, shareable plates, and a lively, historic atmosphere. It's a fun, slightly more inventive lunch stop if you're looking to try something different!

  • Bronco’s - Dahlonega’s newest eatery! Tasty smash burgers, chicken tenders, and their famous Cowboy salad. Offering gluten free options.


Dinner

  • Shenanigans Irish Pub – my favorite Dahlonega lunch+ dinner spot! It's one of a kind and has been nominated as the best Irish restaurant in Georgia. I recommend the "crack dip," fish and chips, and my personal favorite, the Shillelagh sandwich.

  • Chef Pacos – my favorite “upperscale” dinner. It’s one of our more upperscale dinner options but still has a laid back vibe. Their fried calamari paired is the best in town! My husband loves the pork chop and I’m a big fan of the trout. 

  • The Smith House Restaurant – if you’re looking for a classic, southern cooking restaurant, make sure you add The Smith House to your stops. It’s a family-style dining experience where you’ll find all the southern dishes that Georgia's known for, including fried chicken, cream corn, fried okra, and so much more!

  • Bourbon Street Grille – for something with a little more flair, Bourbon Street Grille brings New Orleans to North Georgia with jambalaya, gumbo, and muffulettas. Grab a seat on their balcony overlooking the square for one of the best sunset views in town!

  • Spirits Tavern – if you’re a burger lover, this one is a go-to for tourists and locals alike. Known for their gourmet burgers, specialty cocktails, and cool atmosphere, there’s something on the menu for everyone. 


Dessert 

  • Connie's Ice Cream – Connie’s has been open since the 50s and is a Dahlonega gem! They serve the best hand-dipped ice cream in town and offer deluxe sandwiches if you need a quick bite (my favorite is buffalo chicken panini with potato salad).

  • The Fudge Factory – since 1982, The Fudge Factory has specialized in hand-dipped chocolates, confections, and over 15 varieties of fresh cream and butter fudge. They offer over 70 handmade chocolates and fudges, pralines, and melt in your mouth brittles. 

  • Paul Thomas Chocolates – if you’re looking for something other than ice cream, this chocolate haven is another great stop for a sweet treat! Their handcrafted truffles and chocolates are delightful (my personal favorites are the white chocolate lemon truffle and the sea salted turtle clusters.) They also have an antique toy train that runs along the store, that’s a favorite among kiddos!

Things To Do In Dahlonega, GA

In addition to serving up some of the best food in North Georgia, Dahlonega also has LOTS of attractions in and around town and fall is one of the best times to visit to be able to enjoy it all. 

Here’s what I’d recommend while you’re in town:

Waterfalls and Hiking Trails 

North Georgia in the fall means waterfalls surrounded by color, and Dahlonega is home base for some of the best. You could truly spend an entire weekend chasing waterfalls and going on hikes, but I’ll assume you want to do some other things too, so here’s just a few:

  • Amicalola Falls – as mentioned earlier, this is Georgia's tallest waterfall at 729 feet and the Amicalola Falls Loop Trail gives you the best views if you're up for some stairs. 

  • Desoto Falls – for something easier with the kids this is a gentle 1.9-mile trail leading to two separate waterfalls: Dicks Creek Falls (also called Waters Creek Falls) and Cane Creek Falls at Camp Glisson.

  • Preacher’s Rock – for a view without a waterfall, the two-mile round trip up to Preacher's Rock near Woody Gap is one of my favorite easy hikes for fall color.

Wineries

Dahlonega is part of what people often call “Napa Valley of the South” as the little town is home to 8 commercial wineries and 12 wine-tasting rooms, with several located right in the historic downtown square. Again, you could spend an entire day visiting all of the wineries and there’s lots of different winery tour options that you can book during your visit to help you make the most of your time. 

If you simply want to explore the wineries on your own, some of the top ones include:

  • Montaluce Winery and and Restaurant – you’ll feel like you just stepped into Italy with this upscale winery that pairs a full farm-to-table dining experience with sweeping mountain views. Located just 5 minutes from our family farm.

  • Wolf Mountain Vineyards – one of the most beloved vineyards in town, set at 1,800 feet with award-winning estate wines

  • Kaya Vineyard and Winery – perched atop a 1,600-foot ridge, Kaya offers some of the best panoramic mountain views in North Georgia, with a spacious covered deck, live music in warmer months, and wines made exclusively from estate-grown grapes.

  • Cavender Creek Vineyards – a small, rustic farm winery built around an old family farm theme, complete with donkeys and pasture dogs roaming the property. It's a laid-back stop with muscadine wines, sangrias, and wine slushies on the menu.

  • Accent Cellars – the only winery within Dahlonega's city limits with lawn games and a relaxed patio right along Cane Creek



Shopping

The square itself is basically one big fall shopping trip where you'll find local boutiques, jewelry shops, art galleries, and home goods stores all within a few blocks, including favorites like:


  • Dahlonega Goods – the best place to snag a cute and cozy Dahlonega sweatshirt for memorabilia.

  • The Humble Abode – seriously the cutest home decor and gift finds. 

  • The Humble Candle – you’ll never want to buy a candle anywhere else after you smell these!

  • Dahlonega General Store – a charming downtown square isn’t complete without a general store and Dahlonega’s is sure to entertain adults and kids alike with unique finds

  • Giggle Monkey Toys – if you have kiddos, this is a must stop! It’s a true toy store, just like the good ol’ days!



You can plan to spend a solid afternoon just wandering in and out of shops between coffee and lunch or even browse through each one if you have to wait for seating at your dinner stop!

Antiquing 

Beyond your traditional shopping, if you love a good treasure hunt, Dahlonega's antique shops are worth setting aside real time for. The square and surrounding streets are dotted with antique stores full of vintage finds, from old gold rush-era pieces to mid-century furniture and jewelry.

Some of the best antique stores in Dahlonega include: 

  • No. 3 Vintage – tucked downstairs on the same street of Paul Thomas Chocolates, this shop is known for its beautifully curated, romantic collection of antique and vintage pieces.

  • Gateway Antique Mall – a sprawling antique mall just north of the square with everything from vintage furniture to college memorabilia and classic cameras.

  • Antiques and Collectibles – located just off the square (directly across from the Holiday Inn) with over 100 booths full of vintage treasures to dig through.

  • Angry Mamas – Dahlonega’s newest antique store, this spacious 17,500-square-foot store is filled with antiques, decor, art, furniture, and vintage finds of every kind.

Entertainment

When you’ve had your fill of hiking, wineries, and shopping, be sure to enjoy one of the famous entertainment options in town, including:

  • See a show at The Holly Theater – a  beautifully restored 1948 theater right on the square, the Holly Theater is the heart of Dahlonega's local arts scene, hosting live theatrical productions, concerts, and shows throughout the year. It's a perfect way to spend a cool fall evening downtown!

  • Watch live music at Canopy and The Roots – right next door to the Holly Theater, Canopy and The Roots is part coffeehouse, part underground listening room and bar, hosting local songwriters, comedians, and performers in a cozy, one-of-a-kind space.

  • Go on a Dahlonega Ghost Tour – if you’re a fan of spooky season, you’re in the right place!  Dahlonega's history comes with its fair share of ghost stories and a guided ghost tour is a fun, family-friendly way to explore downtown after dark. You'll wind past haunted hotspots like the Holly Theater and the old Lumpkin County Jail while hearing local legends passed down for generations.

  • Visit the Consolidated Gold Mine – you can’t visit Dahlonega without panning for gold! At Consolidated Gold Mine, you’ll head 200 feet underground on a guided tour through real gold mine tunnels dating back to 1895. Once you're back above ground, you can try your hand at gold panning, and keep whatever you find!

Can’t Miss Fall Events and Activities In and Around Dahlonega

As you can see, Dahlonega doesn’t run short of things to do, but fall makes it extra special with few seasonal specific events and activities that you can’t miss during your visit!

Leaf Looking

The first one being leaf looking of course! If you’re visiting Dahlonega in the fall, it’s probably because you want to see the beautiful red, orange, and yellow leaves that take the area by storm this time of year. 

As a local photographer, this is my FAVORITE time of year and it really is something worth seeing. While you’re in town, I recommend driving up Wolf Mountain Trail, heading towards Woody Gap, or just walking the square – the color is everywhere from mid-October through early November.

And if you really want to soak in the season and never forget it, it's the perfect time for a family photo session! While planning your visit, consider booking a fall session so you can walk away with images of your family surrounded by all that gorgeous color. 

Attend Gold Rush Days Festival

This is the fall festival that Dahlonega is known for and has been taking place since 1954! The 2-day Gold Rush Days Festival takes over the square every third full weekend of October (October 17–18, 2026), with over 300 artisan and craft vendors, live bluegrass and Americana music, gold panning demonstrations, and a parade, all set against peak fall foliage. It's free to attend, but trust me… plan to get there early! People come from all over to attend this festival and it draws one of the biggest crowds you’ve ever seen. 

Burt's Pumpkin Farm

Another popular Dawsonville spot in the fall is Burt's Pumpkin Farm! It opens September 1st for pumpkin season, with hayrides through the patch, twenty varieties of pumpkins, and their famous homemade pumpkin bread and pumpkin roll. It's an easy, classic fall stop for the whole family. Be sure to check out their new drive thru Pumpkin, and grab a pumpkin roll on your way out for a tasty treat!

Visit BJ Reece Orchards

Additionally, just a short drive over to Ellijay, you’ll find BJ Reece Orchards that offers u-pick apples through the end of October, with wagon rides, a petting farm, and their famous fried apple pies. It's a full day of fall farm fun and one of my favorite spots to send families looking for a classic autumn outing!

Plan Your Fall Weekend Getaway to Dahlonega, GA

And there ya have it! Your local’s guide to Dahlonega this fall and I did NOT hold back. Even as a local, I’m still in awe every season when the leaves start to turn and I personally love bopping around town any chance I get, even though I’ve been to all the shops and restaurants hundreds of times.
